RESCUE DOGS TALK ABOUT THEIR OLD HOMES
Chaplin (Lhasa Apso Mix): “When I was little I slipped into a tub where people bathe me and I couldn’t breathe. I also had a little lady that always was cutting my hair. She liked me a lot. She took really good care of me. I ate human food no dog food. My new person is right that family call me Chupacabra. The boys in the called me that. One day, I got stolen out of the car window. My captures brought me to the shelter because I kept getting so sick with throw-up and diarrhea. I love my family now. They are not as obsessive with being clean. They have so much fun with me. I love my little friend I have. It is like everyday something new and exciting happens. I am not frightened of being stolen again because they make sure I am safe.”
Ricky (Aussie Mix): “You know what happened to me. I had too much energy and I would chase chickens. I would also scratch people when I jumped. So they kept me tied. I got let off morning and night to play with big boys down the street. I pooped and peed then. They loved dogs running after balls. I had people who loved dogs, but didn’t now enough about them. They fed me better meat than I get now. I miss the meat I ate there. I think I had worm diseases cause I had stomach ache a lot of the time. Now only sometimes have a stomach-ache.”
Henna (mini Aussie): “You know what happened to me is that I got used as a tug toy by a big dog. They grabbed my leg out of its socket. It didn’t scare me because I have what people call recovery. I liked to say that when you are rescued you think the world is way better than you thought before and when that happens the future is so wonderful you don’t ever think of anything bad again.”
Natasha (German Shepherd): “My old owner dropped me off by a car. I had to run really fast to try to catch up. I couldn’t make it. I wandered until a woman picked me up and took me to the death shelter.”
LUCKY aka "Fancy"
Lucky (Chihuahua): “I had a lot babies who stayed with me for a long time until they went away. I had a lot of dog friends. I didn’t like when people would come to the dog area because they were really loud and they would bring a lot of kids. They would hold us and run with us. I hated that.”
Rocky II (Golden Retriever): “At my old home men used to shoot bebe guns in the back yard and there were motorcycles across the street. I don’t like either noise now. My current person is the best home for me. He cares more about me than I could have ever dreamed about before.”

FRIGHTNED OF FIREWORKS! HERE IS WHAT TO SAY:
It is firework season again!
This is a stressful time of year for even our most confident pets. Random unpredictable popping and sizzling goes off with no warning deafening our animals’ ears and confusing their senses. The smell of burning alone can send our animals into flee mode.
So what do we do? The first thing we do is to explain to our animals what is going to happen on the days leading up to Fourth of July and throughout the weekend. I want you to sit in a quiet place with your animals. Breathe. I am going to give you something to say to your animals. While you talk to your animals picture everything you say as if there are clips of a movie playing in your mind. Feel every emotions and sense in your body as if it is happening to yourself at this very moment.
Say to them, “I want to explain to you what will be happening in the next few days (pictures a few sunsets and sunrises). Every year, on this weekend adults and children play with toys (picture them with one of their toys and then a human with a firework). These human toys make a lot of loud noises (hear sizzling and popping in your head). They also burn (remember the smell in you mind), but are safe (picture the burning only being around a firework). These toys are so wonderful for people because they fly high up in the sky and create beautiful colorful patterns in the sky or off of the toy. (Picture the fireworks and people in awe). This happens every year. People all over play with their own fireworks and then they go to a certain place on one night and watch a big display of fireworks. (Picture people playing joyfully at their home with fireworks and then traveling to where there is crowds and a watching a big display). I know that it is scary (picture your animal scared), but you are safe and you must stay home where you are truly protected. (Picture them confident, aware and staying home on Fourth of July). There will be no more fireworks in a few days. (Picture it quiet again after the sunrises and sets a few times). This is what I will do for you on the day where the noise is the worse (explain where they will be and how you will help them.) I love you and want you to feel safe.”
This is what you must do: All outside animals should be contained in a safe place. Many animals that would never run away flee in terror on July 4th. Please bring them into a safe place (garage laundry room…). Make sure they cannot climb out of windows or open the doors. At the very least lock yard gates, but inside is preferable. Bring all your animals in at least an hour or two before nightfall. Once the noise starts it will be harder to find them. Close all windows, turn on fans or AC, leave the TV or light classical music on. Close shades so that the animals do not see the fireworks. If you animal is frightened inside you can put a t-shirt on your animal. Safety pin the shirt around the stomach so it is snug. This can give awareness to your dog’s body and can create more confidence. Some dogs like to go under beds or in a covered crate. Give your dog a light meal. Eating can affect the limbic system (the emotional center of the brain). If you have to sedate your animal please tell them what you are doing and the reaction of the drug so they do not get frightened when they get groggy.
Please think of your animal this weekend. Take the time out to explain to them what will be happening. Be overly cautious about keeping them safe. It can safe their life. More animals end up lost, dead, or in the shelter on Fourth of July than on any other day. Some are never found. Please take the time to take care of your pets!
Tell your animals that people are playing games that make loud popping noises. Remember it happens every year. You are safe inside.Be brave!

DIARY OF A PET PSYCHIC
So I thought I would inform everyone what has been going on in my, the Pet Psychic’s, life these last few weeks.
I got attacked by a facebook friend. She accused me of making up my communication with a spotted leopard. She asked, “What wild animal in captivity does not want to be back in the wild?” To my delight, many of my facebook friends swooped in to my defense. I of course, did not make up the communication but it got me thinking. Is there a wild animal in captivity that does not long to be in the wild? Siegfried and Roy’s tigers look pretty happy and perhaps there is a lazy lion out there that does not want to hunt for his/her food or perhaps a dolphin that feels more connected to the pool and its trainers than the raw nature of the ocean. Hum…if anyone knows such an animal I would be more than happy to talk to him/her for free. I am curious. Of course I do have my views about keeping wild animals in captivity, but I am also THEIR VOICE and it is my mission to leave my judgment aside and relay the truth of what they are thinking. They are individuals just like we humans are. Their views on captivity could be very different.
A few weeks ago, on a radio show, I heard an insurance gentlemen saying that he insures exotic animals. One of the things he does is go with them while they travel. He was proud to state that exotic animals in captivity are great for education and study. (I could sometimes go along with that.) He talked about whales being packed in ice as they flew from Iceland to Florida. (Trapped in the wild and sent to SeaWorld perhaps?) H also mentioned that he just flew 100 sea lions across the world. He claimed the organization was so humane that they made sure fresh water blew in the sea lions eyes during the 10-hour flight. This insured that their eyes wouldn’t dry out. The radio host remarked, “You are so interesting. You have join us again…Tell the listeners your website?” Am I the only one that thinks, “This is insane! Maybe this is not ok! Maybe these animals are suffering during travel! This feels wrong!”?
This morning I met a man in Starbucks who said, “I used to work at a factory farm in Missouri. We had over 4,000 chickens in little cages.” It could have been 40,000? I don’t recall. “In the winter over a 100 chickens would die each night. It’s normal to have that many chickens die. The eagles would wait outside the factory each morning and the workers would throw the dead chickens up to them.” Oh my! Could you imagine that sight? None of that seemed ok to me (Dead chickens, feeding wild animals) Am I the only one that is confused? I can’t even imagine telling my friend Melissa, AKA THE CHICKEN LADAY, this story. She spends hours tube feeding sick chickens each day. If 100 chickens are dying how many chickens are sick? You may be eating them and their eggs! Oh my gosh! Free Range Everybody! Free Range!
I have not been one to push my views. But I can’t help myself.
What do you all think?
