Dhatri

Dhatri

Dhatri’s person writes: Thank you, so much Laura. You are extraordinary. It was such a help to “communicate in words” with Dhatri.

Dhatri is a 6 year old rescue from DAWG. He hadn’t had a home for 4 years. He was picked up as a stray and put in kennels in Santa Maria, and then he was at DAWG for 9 months.

I’ve been blessed to have Dhatri for 4 months and he is an angel. Enclosed are some of the things he said that deeply touched my heart and the hearts of those that know Dhatri, and who knew him at DAWG. x o x o

Dhatri said: “My mom when she talks to me and when she pets me I feel safe. I told everyone at DAWG that this mom is the best mom for me. I looked at them in the eye and I said it over and over and they had a meeting and they agreed. [This was verified by Dhatri's Foster mom at DAWG!]

I have had an easier time of leaving the kennel behind cause my mom is really sure of herself in the way that she cares for me. Though sometimes I hear what sounds like a chain-link gate closing and I am thrown right back there with all that pee smell and the barking dogs. (Like Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome, Laura said.) I have tried to leave my barking there. I didn’t want to take it with me. It is like screaming without a voice. I have a voice. My mom she comforts me all the time. I am happy and I know I am not going back.”

RESCUE GUEST HUMAN & DOG:

Jill Gasparac

What Is Your Passion or Your Story
Saving senior dogs! I mainly save senior pets, giving them a peaceful place to spend their last days/months/years. I mostly save them from our local shelters, but also have taken in owner surrender and foreclosure dogs. Recently I saved 10 dogs from a hoarding situation and have been working with the Kern shelter this past month regarding these dogs.

APe Action: Animals, People, and Environment Action
Website  http://www.apeaction.org
Address  West Hollywood, Ca

We really are in need of foster homes/donations and sponsors. We can’t save dogs w/o donations or the help of people by fostering them for us until they are adopted. Senior pets are usually very easy to foster and just need a nice soft bed and some love and attention. We could save so many more that are dying each day in shelters if people would foster. WE are working on our first PSA and it’s going to be about the need for people to help by fostering!

Zorro 5-10 years old Chihuahua

Zorro Needs A Home

History or Story
A recent save from the hoarder situation. He was supposedly 5 yrs old, per the shelter intake paperwork, but he seems like he might be older than that. Has health issues and is a special needs pet because of this.

Questions You Would Like To Ask The Animal
What is your favorite thing about being here? Would you like to be at the other foster home instead?

How did you end up at the hoarder house?

Do you understand that you are safe here and we are working on finding you the perfect home that will treat you like a king and love you forever?

Do you understand that when you get upset and bark, you make yourself cough and that’s not good for you? (can you ask him if he’s barking when I leave? I hear it when I come home, but not when I’m leaving so not sure if it’s only when they know I’m back or the whole time I’m gone!)

You need to stay calm so you can breathe AND you need to take your medicine so it can help you breathe!

Anything else?
Please go to our website to find out how you can adopt/foster/donate/volunteer…we need people to do so many little things that will be so helpful. Fundraising is a major part of rescue and we need people to help with that if they can’t adopt/foster/donate.

What the baby panda has to say…

What Does The Real Panda Think Of The Human Pandas?

Researchers dressed in panda costumes put a panda cub into a basket before transferring it to a new living environment at the Hetaoping Research and Conservation Center on February 20.
The panda costumes are part of a new plan to reintroduce captive giant pandas back into the wild. (Photo & text from Reuters)

———————————–

I couldn’t resist.  I had to ask, “Little Panda, What Do You Think Of The Giant Pandas That Put You In The Basket?”

Little Panda says,

“I knew they were not real pandas because they smell different and their faces dont make the chewing motion that pandas make.

But I felt safe because they looked a little like me. Their fur felt and smelled strange, but I kept having a feeling that they were good and that they were going to make me safe.

They brought me to a place that I now call home and I feel the best I have ever felt.

I know that they are human because I know what humans smell like but I know also that I should only let humans that look like pandas pet me.  I think they were trying to tell me that.  I am thankful for them.

Can I tell you that those humans… if they are helping other pandas than they should break the sticks of vegetation before they feed the pandas cause then it smells tastier and the scared pandas will eat more.”

What Is Your Passion or Your Story
No Kill Kern county-California. 80% of the animals that enter out US “shelter” systems are Killed. In many areas when the No Kill equation is adopted the kill stats are reduced dramatically almost over night. As an animal loving nation WE have to stop the slaughter. We have to demand better for all the animals. some of the fioxes are as simple as changing the “shelter” hours to be more conducive to ADOPTION byu being open when the adopting public is available. We have been fed the “killing Is kind” paradigm fat to LONG. by calling it euthanazia WE perpetuate the myth….

Voice Of A Laboratory Chimpanzee

There are an estimated 2,000 chimps held in captivity in the United States. These chimps are used for entertainment, invasive biomedical research, and as exotic pets. More often than not the chimps suffer in these environments.

I have contacted one anonymous chimpanzee. Here we will call her Faith. Faith lived for 20-plus years at a biomedical research laboratory. For the last 13 years she has been at a sanctuary. Here I ask Faith to tell us her story.

Laura: Faith, would you like to tell me anything about your past?

Faith: I was taken from the wild when I was very young. They shot my mom with a gun and her blood splattered on me. Then they grabbed me and put me in a burlap bag and I couldn’t get out. They brought me to a market where a man took me home. The man spent a lot of time taming me and making me understand him. He taught me how to put on clothing, go to the bathroom, and eat with utensils. I slept in a cage. He took me to a place where I had to perform tricks for people. Any type of loud noise reminded me of my mom being shot and her blood in her eyes.

One day a loud noise was set off and I was back in that memory. I bit someone and then others put me in a cage for many weeks and nobody came to talk to me; they just threw food at me and then I ended up at the laboratory. At the laboratory they gave me lots of drugs so that I couldn’t stand up. They would tie my arms with these tight straps and shoot things in my veins and then they would take a lot of blood from me and I would feel even dizzier. There were other chimps there and they would howl and bang the cages, but I learned to go deep inside of myself and remember when my mom would rock me in her arms or when I would feel the trees up against my stomach. I would remember the dirt on my feet and I think the chimps that never had that were worse off because they only had the mean people with needles to remember.

Some people at the lab liked me because I knew not to bite anyone anymore and I would try to stay calm and so they would take me to the bathroom and hold my hand and walk around with me or give me special food but only for short periods because they didn’t like any sign of energy, and if I tried to play or run they would give me the drugs that would make me tired and sick to my stomach. People are bad. My left arm still is sore from all the needles. When I think of the lighting there it hurts my eyes.

Laura: Faith can you tell me a little about the sanctuary where you are now?

Faith: I am still in a cage but it is bigger. I have friends and I am able to think for myself and people find joy in watching me. I don’t feel like I am in a natural place but I feel as if I am in a place where I am safe and my friends here feel safe and we get good food to eat and people smile here. I get scared when the doctor comes but I have learned its okay. When I sleep at night, sometimes I awake and I forget where I am or I have nightmares.

I would like a big ball to roll. I would like those toys where you have to figure out what shape goes into the hole.

One of my left toes hurts sometimes. Can you tell my people that sometimes I want them to leave me sleeping later and I want a blanket? Tell my new people that I don’t want my old people to visit. They are scary.

Laura: Do you know that there are people who are trying to protect chimpanzees? So that others will not have to go through what you went through.

Faith: I know there are people fighting for us. Can you tell those people that they cut animals open and kill animals at the laboratory and just leave their bodies for all of us to see? Can you tell those people that I would like them to do something to remember those chimps that have died with no respect?

Laura: What would you like them to do?

Faith: I would like the people to dedicate a climbing tree to them ‘cause they would have liked to have felt a tree up against their body.

BELOW IS A VIDEO OF LABORATORY CHIMPS SEEING THE OUTSIDE FOR THE FIRST TIME.  Faith is not one of these chimps:

Ms. Tegan

Ms. Tegan, found tethered to a warehouse In Gardena CA with burns on her. She is a Lab mix, approx 9 months old, spayed, chipped and current on all shots. Very dog social, no kitties :) .

I’d like to know what happened to her and why all those burns. How is she feeling now that we have her all healed up and does she enjoy living in my home. Was she as neglected as much as we thought and does she like her foster siblings.. LOL This will be a cute answer..

Gabe

Gabe is a 1 year old Collie mix, owner contacted DDB to relinquish him because she knew he did in fact deserve better. He is VERY dog and cat social. He is neutered, chipped and current on shots.

Gabe, well he is just so amazing there really isn’t much to ask other than how did that freedom day feel when I went to pick him up and how if felt living the life @ the end of a chain.
