Jayne Miller with OreCat.org

Jayne emailed me: I am founder/director of www.OreCat.org, and I wonder if Oregon’s cougars know how much I love them and how I am trying to save and protect them from hunting. To the world I am a polished business woman, farmer, public speaker, author and artist who never talks about the above. But to those who understand, I am all of the above.

Jayne also emails me:

Please ask the cougars if they know I am trying to protect their lives by way of a Bill called License To Protect by OK to ask?  Do they feel my energy, to they “hear” my love for them?

About 8 years ago there was a cougar who walked with me on our farm.  It was after dark under the savannah oaks and I could not see the cougar, but knew something was there.  As I walked, they walked.  When I stopped, they stopped.

The next morning I found cougar tracks about 8 feet from were I was walking.  The cougar walked with me about 900 feet or more unseen.   I believe he/she may be dead.  They had to cross a freeway to find my farm.

All told, there were 3 unusual cougar happenings, one actually being a plant called Possum Haw, that helped me start Oregon Cougar Action Team and the Bill License To Protect.  It is a Bill I have designed to help protect cougars and it is a Bill that has the potential to happen in other States.

See this months Natural Geographic to learn about the vanishing big cats.  This article includes cougars.  My idea of this Bill seems very timely and I plan on posting License To Protect in more detail on OreCat’s website this coming weekend!

I got the Bill introduced at last years State Legislative session, but the Agriculture Committee, by law, reviews all wildlife Bills and they changed it so much I did not recognize it!  Both my draft of the License To Protect, Representative Buckely’s request for the Bill and the final butchered version of my idea, Bill 1202 are attached.

I plan on tying again this next session to reintroduce the original Bill unaltered by any committees. If all goes well with the interview on your radio, may OreCat create a link too it?   Thank you so much!

Below is a picture of a mother and her cub.  I do not know how old they are or if they are still alive.  But the picture catches hearts.

What Is Your Passion or Your Story
My passion is to Stop the killing of cougar and wolves. To give them safe homes and places just to be what God made them to be. To enjoy seeing the God Light and energy round them and what they give back to the ecosystems that keeps us all living well. They are good energy and we need to remove the darkness from our hearts that kills them and instead learn to live fear free of them and to believe in their great purpose. I sincerely hope that my idea, License To Protect, will help achieve this.
License To Protect would create a new employer for Oregon Department Of Fish & Wildlife (ODFW) by way of the non-hunting Oregonian (or any Oregonian) buying a nonlethal license for cougar or wolves at the same cost as a killing license; thus reducing the numbers of wolves and cougar killed. ODFW, The Federal Government Wildlife Agency, Oregon’s Agriculture Department and any other agency involved with the killing of cougar and wolves; would be required to hold to the letter of the law License To Protect and not increase kill quotas to offset the cougar and wolves saved from death that LTP would achieve. Currently, there are more Bills and programs from the above organizations established without an environmental impact risk factor or unbiased outside peer review done before thrusting them upon Oregon’s ecosystems; to kill cougar and wolves, thus insuring that there is no true protection for either species at this time.

I grew up on our family’s 7000 acre cattle ranch my father managed using the knowledge of Aldo Leopold. We did not allow hunting and I walked with the wildlife including cougar. 30 years later on my farm in the heavily populated Willamette Valley, a cougar came and found me and walked with me and asked me in my heart to start Oregon Cougar Action Team. A plant, Possum Haw, which is extinct on the East Coast because the cougar has been killed off; came to my farm in that fall desquised as a dogwood, but then in the Spring told me that it was a plant nearly gone because it had lost it’s keystone protector – the cougar. I started Oregon Cougar Action Team a 501c3 educational foundation with no money. Apparently, it was not needed. People came instead and an attorney who did all the paper work for the NFP, probono. We were immediately put on K2New and in several newspapers. The energy is right, the purpose is good and it all conn ects.
Questions You Would Like To Ask The Animal
What are the cougar thinking about Oregon Cougar Action Team. About our Bill License To Protect. Do they know how much I love them. I miss them – all the ones I could not save.
